Why We Don't Power Wash
| Cool Ponds uses a garden hose only -- not a power washer. Read on to find out why. |
If you have ever had someone other than Cool Ponds clean your pond before, there's a good chance a power washer was involved. It would seem to make sense -- getting the pond as clean as possible. Except -- we are talking about ponds here, not pools.
Our goal with our ponds and our clients' ponds is to create an ecosystem. Why? We strive for water features to be low-maintenance, and a pond with an ecosystem is definitively low-maintenance. We aim to mimic Mother Nature. And guess what? There's no power washer in Mother Nature's tool cabinet.
What does happen in nature are spring rains... rains that cleanse the water and remove the loose debris. So that's what we do! We keep the ecosystem in place. We don't destroy it.
A natural green coating should grow on all the surfaces under the water of your pond. This green coating, or carpet algae is a main component of the ecosystem and does wonders for your water clarity! It consumes nutrients in your pond that would other wise feed single-celled algae -- the algae that makes your water look like pea soup.
When a new pond is installed, it takes a little while to develop that carpet algae. We want the carpet algae to grow without becoming long and stringy. That takes a little work at the onset. So why on earth if we want the carpet algae to grow would we blast it off each spring only to wait for it to grow again; all the while hoping the water doesn't' turn green in the mean time?
During a pond cleaning we will sometimes apply a light dose of an algaecide IF there is an excessive string algae build up. We then carefully spray that off with a pressure nozzle of the garden hose and then pump all that out of the pond before we replenish with fresh water. And that's all we use -- just the pressure nozzle of the garden hose. Not nearly the pressure of a power washer!
So after your pond cleaning, you will add the products BioClear and Clean and Remove Away Plus, both natural bacteria and enzyme products, to get your beneficial bacteria count back up, and you are ready for the season. No harsh chemicals, no chemicals at all, are needed to keep your pond looking great all year. Just keep using the BioClear and Clean and Remove Away Plus.
Can it really be that easy? Yes! Especially when you don't have to start over year after year.
