Don't risk harm to your fish or a slew of algae during the winter and next spring -- keep your water feature clean this fall! Keeping your water feature clean doesn't have to be a chore. Follow these easy steps to a healthier, cleaner water feature:
Cut back aquatic plants as they become dormant.
Remove tropical aquatic plants from the water feature at the first frost.
Install a leaf net over your water feature .... correctly!
Letting the net lie flat over the water surface does no good -- the leaves are still in the water and will start to decay. The net should be "domed" over the water feature. Confused? Check out our Netting Display at Cool Ponds after our cleaning class through November.
Keep using beneficial bacteria until the water temperature reaches 35-40 degrees.
It's important to keep bacteria digesting any debris that gets in your pond as long as possible. Most beneficial bacteria stops working at 50 degrees so it's important to use a cool water bacteria. Get our favorite cool water beneficial bacteria here.
Consider a fall cleaning.
If your water feature already has a muck layer in the bottom or if your water seems cloudy, we recommend a total fall pond cleaning. You will thank yourself later when you see our emails this winter about dealing with winter string algae and you don't have any!!! Check our website for any upcoming demonstrations on fall netting and cleaning in September.
