Five Reasons to Net Your Pond

Once upon a time I thought netting my pond was just too much of a hassle.  It looks bad, it's a lot of work, etc. etc.  We can get all those leaves out with a long handled net and our skimmer, right?  Well, we went through several years of that before we realized it just wasn't working.

We preach setting up your pond so you can enjoy it not work on it -- well our leaf method definitely wasn't following that!

Here are 5 reasons you should always net your pond in the fall...

You set it up once and don't worry about it.
There is no worrying about going out every day to scoop more leaves out.  And to even try to go without a net, this is what you would have to do.  Not for me!

There's more protection for your pump.
When your pump gets clogged or starved for water, you lessen its life.  By keeping the leaves out, you are actually prolonging the life of your pump.  It wants to flow, so let it!

Almost everything stays out, keeping your pond cleaner and healthier.
You're never going to keep everything out, but with a net over your pond, almost everything stays out.  Without a net, forget it! Once those leaves hit the water they start to break down, essentially contaminating the water.  The water will be dark, debris filled, and not as safe for your fish.

More oxygen for your fish!
As leaves or anything organic begins to decay, it takes oxygen out of the water.  We want to have as much oxygen for our fish as possible. By keeping the leaves out, we don't have to worry about this!

Much, much less work next spring!
Keeping the leaves out this fall will save you so much headache next spring!  A little work now will save you so much work later. You will thank your past self for a job well done!

But it's still going to look bad, right?  Well, just for a little while.  Wait until the last minute to set it up and take it down as soon as you can.  We got to the point where we set up the net mid October and took it down as soon as the leaves were down -- usually right around Thanksgiving.

Netting is so worth it.  You will never regret it!
